Our courses have been specifically designed to take advantage of a unique university-model seminar format. Each course occupies a 1.5 to 2-hour block to provide the maximum amount of instruction time per week. Each teacher is a private instructor who sets and collects his or her own registration, tuition and fees and is responsible for recording grades and issuing report cards on a regular basis. Language Arts
Wordsmiths: Middle School Grammar and Composition
Instructor: Jill Anderson
Designed for seventh and eighth graders, Wordsmiths explores all four major modes of writing: expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive. While the primary focus is on writing, this course does have a grammar and mechanics component designed to give students confidence in using language appropriately. As of 6/26 - only 3 spots left! Writing I

Writing I is designed for 9-10th graders. It focuses primarily on expository writing and developing organizational skills and proficiency with complex sentences and vocabulary. The class culminates in a major research project. As of 6/26 - only 2 spots left!

Writing II

Writing II is designed for juniors and seniors. This AP-level course focuses on the art of argumentative writing and prepares students for the critical analysis and synthesis of college-level materials demanded in college. As of 6/26 - only 3 spots left!

Senior Honors Thesis
Instructor: Jill Anderson
The Senior Honors Thesis is a full year long guided research project that results in a thesis and presentation at the end of the year. Students must have completed Writing II and will meet monthly rather than weekly.

Writing About Literature
Instructor: Joanna Rempel-Knighten
The focus of the Writing About Literature class is the close reading of poetry, fiction, drama, and creative non-fiction in a historical context. Students delve into representative works of literature to determine structure, style, and theme, as well as how these reflect the beliefs and theories of the works’ time and how the work relates to our time. The students then respond to these essays in multiple ways, including the writing of reflective, analytical, and critical essays. Download the registration form

Creative Writing
Instructor: Joanna Rempel-Knighten
Writing creatively provides a fun and encouraging atmosphere to exercise and expand necessary skills for all types of composition, from academic essays to novels. This creative writing class will focus briefly on genre analysis before moving on to our two main areas of concentration: poetry and fiction. Students will learn compositional skills that can be easily transferred to other types of writing as they create, revise, and polish their work. Expected assignments can include (but are not limited to) regular journaling, critical analyses of model texts, the creation of poems or short stories, the critique and revision of the same, and reflections on the writing process. Foundations in Personal Finance
Instructor: Joanna Rempel-Knighten
Designed for high school students preparing for their upcoming independence, this highly interactive class explores various areas of personal finance. We'll discuss a variety of topics, including taxes, insurance, investing, and even how to responsibly pursue a post-high school education. Students will respond with a variety of exploratory and practical assignments, culminating in a final project that will explore an area of personal finance that is of special interest to the student. High School US History
Instructor: Nichelle Nelson
Students will work on maps, time lines, and research projects that will require them to go beyond the confines of the textbook to acquire college preparatory critical thinking and research skills. Students will also have the opportunity to submit an entry in the senior division of the National History Day Contest at the regional level

High School World History

This World History course, in the first semester, will cover an overview of civilizations from the creation to the Middle Ages. Second semester will cover European exploration and expansion through 20th-century technology. Students will work on a maps, time lines, and research projects that will require them to go beyond the confines of the textbook to acquire college preparatory critical thinking and research skills. Students will also have the opportunity to submit an entry in the senior division of the National History Day Contest at the regional level.

•This is a course that is aimed at a wide range of ages, from the eighth-grade level to the twelfth-grade level
